Three complementary specialties, one approach to care

About Dr. Berall

Nearly four decades of medicine, focused on one question: What keeps the mind sharp over a lifetime?

Dr. Murray Berall is a specialist practicing general internal medicine, nephrology and sleep medicine. Drawing on this combination of specialties, he has developed a distinctive approach to functional longevity, centered on preserving cognitive health, vitality, and quality of life throughout the lifespan.

His practice focuses on the early identification and thoughtful management of factors that may influence long-term neurocognitive health. Among these, sleep occupies a central role, given its well-established relationship with cognitive function and the risk of neurocognitive decline. Sleep disturbances and reduced total sleep time also affect both athletic and academic performance.

Through a comprehensive, individualized approach, Dr. Berall works to optimize sleep as one of the foundations of health that supports sustained cognitive performance, resilience, and healthy longevity.

Home Sleep
Apnea Testing

A convenient, at-home alternative to an overnight lab study. You wear a small monitoring device for one night in your own bed, then return it for analysis, with no unfamiliar room and no wires strapped on by a technician at midnight.

  • Device pickup and simple setup instructions provided in advance
  • One night of monitoring at home
  • Physician-interpreted results, not just an automated score
  • Best suited to patients with a moderate-to-high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea; complex cases are referred for in-lab study when needed

CPAP
Follow-Up Care

Getting a CPAP machine is step one. Using it consistently and comfortably is the part that actually determines whether treatment works.

  • Mask fit and comfort troubleshooting
  • Pressure setting review and adjustment
  • Compliance data review
  • Managing side effects: dryness, congestion, claustrophobia
  • Long-term therapy check-ins, not just a one-time setup

Common Questions (FAQ)

How accurate is a home sleep apnea test compared to an in-lab study?

Home sleep apnea testing is well-validated for detecting moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in appropriate candidates. It won't capture everything an in-lab polysomnogram can, which is why some cases are still referred for full lab studies. Dr. Berall will let you know if that applies to you.

Do you accept my insurance?

This practice accepts Traditional Medicare and cash/self-pay only. Commercial insurance and Medicare Advantage are not accepted. See the Insurance & Billing section above.

What if my home sleep test result is inconclusive?

Inconclusive results are followed up with a discussion of next steps, which may include a repeat home test or a referral for an in-lab study, depending on your symptoms and risk factors.

If I already have a CPAP machine, can I just come in for follow-up care?

Yes. Many patients come in specifically for ongoing CPAP management, such as mask fit, pressure adjustments, or troubleshooting, without needing a new diagnostic test.

Do you treat sleep issues other than sleep apnea?

Absolutely. Although obstructive sleep apnea remains a hugely underdiagnosed condition and stays a primary focus, Dr. Berall's background in nephrology and general internal medicine means broader sleep and internal medicine concerns are welcome too. Contact the office to discuss what you're experiencing.
